I have always been athletically inclined and open to try new things. I have completed Insanity, have done StrongLifts 5×5, and just about every Les Mills group fitness class there is, but one of the most interesting kinds of physical activity, for me, has been CrossFit. I waited for a box to be opened in Bucharest for quite some time.
What is CrossFit?
According to Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, it is constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life. They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness.
A CrossFit class is structured in the following way:
- warm up
- a mobility piece
- strength / skill component
- and the WOD – workout of the day
The best part about CrossFit is that it is infinitely scalable, the coaches will reduce the number of reps, the load, or modify the movements according to your own abilities so that you can complete the WOD and improve over time.
Me & CrossFit
My first encounter with CrossFit has been at Uzina, the first box to ever open in Bucharest and it has been a disappointing one. While the programming they had was OK, the space was always dirty, locker rooms were unusable, and the coach to athlete ratio was too low. We did not receive the necessary attention a new comer should receive, and the feel of community that CrossFit comes with was absent at Uzina, as well. I ended up getting my subscription money back, after a few struggles.
I had given up on CrossFit in Romania, but then a new box opened nearby – Replay CrossFit. Replay CosssFit owners were the ones who brought CrossFit to Romania in 2012. They had a detour with Uzina Crossfit. You can read all about it here.
Replay CrossFit is a double box located in the North of Bucharest, on Bd. Dimitrie Pompeiu nr. 9-9A, inside Iride Business Park. It is founded by Luminita Marineci-Velarde, a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer (CF-L2), and Joe Velarde.
Coach Luminita is one of the best fitness professionals i have had the chance to work with, always paying attention to the bio-mechanics of the movements, scaling to my abilities, encouraging, outgoing, and so much fun! Big thumbs up!
There are 1-hour-long classes every day, from Monday to Friday, 1 class on Saturday, and Sundays are off. Every class has a maximum of 15 athletes, and 3 coaches on the floor. The standard recommended CrossFit programing is 3 days on, 1 day off, but i try to make it to the box 4 times a week, every other day.
I have been a member for a little over two weeks now, but I can honestly say i have never been happier with my choice. Money well spent. In this time I managed to complete several workouts and movements i never thought my body could do. Like the legendary Filthy Fifty WOD (modified to 30 reps of each movement), Angie – also scaled down to my abilities, cleans, deadlifts, push presses and so on. And on the vanity side, i already lost 3 cm of my belly fat.
If you want to become part of a community based on honesty, pride and generosity of spirit, and become the best version of yourself in the process join Replay CrossFit. You can sign up for a Free Trial class, 8 classes per month, or an unlimited pass. See the prices here. Yes, this membership is more expensive than a regular gym, but it is worth the price based on a few considerations: classes are small so you get dedicated coaches, that watch your every movement and correct you when necessary to prevent injury and make sure that you are also having fun in the process, the equipment is top notch, and the box is clean and well kept.
Give it a shot and thank me later.
